I’m also a “hobbyist” writer, and at one point was working on a fantasy story about a birdlike girl named Raya who was the only living descendent of a matrilineal line that made magical amulets for her tribe.
Unfortunately (like all of my stories so far) I never finished it, but I must have identified quite a lot with Raya because I tried working out what her actual amulets might look like in “real life.”
When I opened up my Etsy shop, I decided to call it “Amulet and Ornament,” with the intention of merging my interest in symbolism with jewelry design. Symbolism draws boundaries for my designs (which now occasionally expands beyond jewelry), while my design work sets parameters for my exploration of symbolism (please see “Meanings” section on this website).
I’ve been researching various methods for making my own charms for a while now. Lots of design ideas but not sure which practical direction to take.
